Professional Decorative Concrete Contractor
Decorative concrete gives a patio, driveway or entry the look of stone, brick or textured tile with the strength and simple care of concrete. The pattern, color and texture are placed with the slab, so they become part of the surface itself.
Mendenhall Concrete installs stamped concrete in Escondido, CA and throughout North County and coastal San Diego. As a decorative concrete contractor, we pour stamped concrete patios, stamped borders and accents on driveways, colored concrete walkways and exposed aggregate entries, along with top cast and sandblast finishes.
Every project begins with a site visit. We review pattern and color options with you, look at how the finish will sit next to your home, roof and landscaping, and then provide a written estimate that sets out the pattern, color, sealer and schedule before work begins.
Why Homeowners Choose Decorative Concrete
Decorative concrete gives you the appearance of natural stone or pavers in one continuous surface. In North County, where strong sun, dry summers and winter rain all take a toll, that surface holds up well with modest care.
The Look of Stone or Brick
Stamped patterns recreate slate, flagstone, cut stone, cobblestone and brick in a single poured surface.
Color Through the Slab
Integral color is mixed into the concrete, so minor chips and surface wear do not reveal a plain gray base.
One Continuous Surface
Apart from planned control joints, a poured slab has no gaps between individual units for weeds to grow in or pieces to shift.
Suited to Local Conditions
Lighter tones stay cooler underfoot in inland heat, and textured finishes add traction on steps, walkways and pool surrounds.
Simple Upkeep
Regular sweeping, an occasional rinse and a fresh coat of sealer every few years keep the color and pattern looking sharp.
When to Replace Worn Concrete with a Decorative Finish
A decorative finish is a strong choice when an existing patio, walkway or driveway reaches the end of its service life. If the slab underneath is sound, cleaning and resealing can often restore a faded decorative surface. When the base has failed, replacement is the more reliable option, and it is the right time to add pattern and color.
You May Need New Concrete If You Notice:
- Cracks Running Through the Pattern: Cracks that cross a stamped pattern or keep widening point to movement below the slab that a patch will not correct.
- Settled or Uneven Sections: Slabs at different heights create trip hazards and can send water toward the house.
- Flaking or Peeling Surface: Scaling, spalling or sealer that peels again soon after resealing suggests the surface itself is failing.
- Standing Water After Rain: Puddles that remain for hours mean the slope no longer carries water away as it should.
- Plain Concrete That No Longer Suits the Home: A worn gray slab next to a remodeled home or new landscaping can be replaced with a pattern and color that fit the property.

Mendenhall Concrete did an excellent job on my driveway. They arrived right on time and got started right away. I watched the whole process and I even made videos of each step. Mike’s team was very professional and obviously focused on doing the best possible job. Not only was the work exemplary but dealing with Mike, the company owner, was easy and friendly. His bid was very thorough in his description of what would be done to accomplish my project. I got several bids and Mendenhal’s bid was the most detailed in the description of the labor needed and obviously showing his knowledge of city coding in laying concrete that other bids I got didn’t. There was absolutely nothing in my experience with Mendenhall Concrete that I didn’t like.![]()

Love these guys! Wonderful company that worked with my ideas and designs to make them work for me. They poured a spa slab in the back and two patio slabs with spaces to backfill with soil and pebble, as well as framed an existing sidewalk with pavers. The pavers bring life to an old sidewalk and it looks like they were always there. They were wonderful, detailed, timely and stayed on budget. Their employees are extremely hard working and cleaned as they went. The owner was out here often to check on progress. We only ran into a couple simple obstacles and they were able to suggest some fixes or work around them. They are have reasonable pricing and found the pavers I wanted. I would highly recommend them! Added some before and after pictures.![]()

We just completed a large project with Mendenhall. Mike and his team delivered a high quality project, on time, and on budget with a level of professionalism that most other SD contractors should take note of. They clearly take pride in the work that they do, and it shows. We couldn't be more pleased with the end result, and while the project had a few bumps along the way, communication was prompt and clear.![]()

My service business worked at a home where concrete was recently poured by Mendenhall Concrete. I was absolutely blown away by how charming this home became via a this concrete. Beautiful flower beds, small walls, walk ways and some steps. It took a “so-so” looking home and it turned into a beautiful and charming home.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified that these reviews were published on Mendenhall Concrete's Google Business Profile. COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STAMPED AND DECORATIVE CONCRETE?
Stamped concrete is one type of decorative concrete. A pattern is pressed into the fresh surface to create the look of stone, brick or tile. Decorative concrete is the broader category and also includes colored concrete, exposed aggregate, top cast and sandblast finishes. Many projects combine two, such as a broom-finished slab with a stamped border.
WHICH STAMPED CONCRETE PATTERNS CAN I CHOOSE FROM?
Popular patterns include slate, flagstone, ashlar cut stone, cobblestone, brick and wood plank. Larger stone patterns suit open patios, while smaller patterns work well on walkways and borders. We review pattern options with you during the estimate and recommend what fits the size and style of the space.
HOW IS COLOR ADDED TO DECORATIVE CONCRETE?
Integral color is mixed into the concrete before it is placed, giving a consistent base tone through the slab. Stamped surfaces usually receive a second, darker accent tone that settles into the texture and adds depth. Final color depends on the mix, finish and curing, so we look at samples together in natural light before choosing.
IS STAMPED CONCRETE SLIPPERY WHEN WET?
A sealed, smooth surface can be slick when wet. Textured patterns help, and a slip-resistant additive can be mixed into the sealer for steps, walkways and areas around pools or spas. For high-traction areas, exposed aggregate and top cast finishes are also good options.
HOW OFTEN DOES STAMPED CONCRETE NEED TO BE RESEALED?
Most stamped surfaces need resealing every two to three years, depending on sun exposure and foot traffic. A dull color or water that no longer beads on the surface is a sign it is time. Resealing protects the color and makes regular cleaning easier.
CAN STAMPED CONCRETE BE USED ON A DRIVEWAY?
Yes. A stamped concrete driveway is placed with the thickness and reinforcement needed for vehicle loads, the same as a standard driveway. Many homeowners choose a broom-finished driveway with a stamped border or apron for a decorative look on a smaller area. See our concrete driveway page for more on driveway installation.
WHAT IS EXPOSED AGGREGATE CONCRETE?
Exposed aggregate concrete has the top layer of cement paste removed to reveal the stones in the mix. The result is a textured, slip-resistant surface that suits entries, walkways, pool surrounds and concrete steps. Top cast is a finer version of the same look, with a light sand-textured finish.
CAN YOU STAMP MY EXISTING CONCRETE?
Stamping is done while concrete is fresh, so an existing slab cannot be stamped. If the old slab is cracked or settled, we recommend removing it and placing a new decorative surface on a properly prepared base. During the site visit we check the existing concrete and explain your options.
DO I NEED A PERMIT FOR A DECORATIVE CONCRETE PROJECT?
Replacing an existing patio or walkway on private property often does not need a permit. New structures and work in the public right-of-way, such as sidewalks and driveway aprons, do. In Escondido, building permits are handled by the City of Escondido Building Division, and we confirm the requirements for your city before work begins.
