Mendenhall Concrete

Professional Concrete Patio Contractor

A patio is where your home extends outdoors. It holds the dining table, the grill and the chairs that come out on warm evenings, so it needs a level surface, a clean finish and water that drains away from the house.

Mendenhall Concrete is a concrete patio contractor serving homeowners in Escondido, CA and throughout North County and coastal San Diego. Each concrete patio installation covers removal of old concrete, grading, base preparation, forming, placement and finishing. We also build concrete pool decks and the walkways and steps that connect a patio to the rest of the yard.

Every project starts with a site visit. We look at how you plan to use the space, where the afternoon sun falls, the condition of the soil and the slope of the yard. You then receive a written estimate that sets out the size, finish and schedule before any work begins.

OUR STANDARDS

Why Concrete Is a Smart Choice for Your Patio

A backyard concrete patio in North County has to handle strong sun, dry summers, winter rain and years of everyday use. Concrete meets those demands with very little upkeep and leaves plenty of room for the finish you want.

Designed for Daily Use

Furniture, grills, planters and foot traffic rest on a slab placed over a properly prepared and compacted base.

Low Maintenance

Regular sweeping and an occasional rinse keep a well-finished patio clean. Decorative finishes only need periodic resealing.

More Living Space

A level patio adds usable space outdoors for dining, relaxing and hosting, and it adds appeal when you decide to sell.

Suited to Local Conditions

Slope, joint layout and base preparation are planned for inland heat, coastal air and the soil movement that follows wet winters.

Custom Finishes

Choose a broom finish, exposed aggregate, integral color or a stamped pattern that complements your home and landscaping.

Repair or Replace

Signs It's Time for Concrete Patio Replacement

Patio problems usually begin below the surface. Once the base settles or water collects under the slab, surface patches rarely last. Concrete patio replacement removes the failed slab, corrects the base and drainage, and gives you a new surface that sits level.

You May Need a New Patio If You Notice:

  • Wide or Spreading Cracks: Cracks that widen, multiply or shift out of line point to movement underneath that a patch will not correct.
  • Sunken or Tilted Sections: Settled slabs create trip hazards, and sections that slope toward the house can send water to the foundation.
  • Standing Water After Rain: Puddles that remain for hours mean the surface no longer sheds water the way it should.
  • Flaking or Worn Surface: Scaling, chipped edges and a rough, dusty finish show a surface near the end of its service life.
  • A Layout That No Longer Fits: A patio that is too small or poorly connected to the house is often better replaced than repaired.

Mendenhall Concrete did an excellent job on my driveway. They arrived right on time and got started right away. I watched the whole process and I even made videos of each step. Mike’s team was very professional and obviously focused on doing the best possible job. Not only was the work exemplary but dealing with Mike, the company owner, was easy and friendly. His bid was very thorough in his description of what would be done to accomplish my project. I got several bids and Mendenhal’s bid was the most detailed in the description of the labor needed and obviously showing his knowledge of city coding in laying concrete that other bids I got didn’t. There was absolutely nothing in my experience with Mendenhall Concrete that I didn’t like.

Love these guys! Wonderful company that worked with my ideas and designs to make them work for me. They poured a spa slab in the back and two patio slabs with spaces to backfill with soil and pebble, as well as framed an existing sidewalk with pavers. The pavers bring life to an old sidewalk and it looks like they were always there. They were wonderful, detailed, timely and stayed on budget. Their employees are extremely hard working and cleaned as they went. The owner was out here often to check on progress. We only ran into a couple simple obstacles and they were able to suggest some fixes or work around them. They are have reasonable pricing and found the pavers I wanted. I would highly recommend them! Added some before and after pictures.

We just completed a large project with Mendenhall. Mike and his team delivered a high quality project, on time, and on budget with a level of professionalism that most other SD contractors should take note of. They clearly take pride in the work that they do, and it shows. We couldn't be more pleased with the end result, and while the project had a few bumps along the way, communication was prompt and clear.

My service business worked at a home where concrete was recently poured by Mendenhall Concrete. I was absolutely blown away by how charming this home became via a this concrete. Beautiful flower beds, small walls, walk ways and some steps. It took a “so-so” looking home and it turned into a beautiful and charming home.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW LONG DOES A CONCRETE PATIO INSTALLATION TAKE?

Most backyard patios take a few days of on-site work. Removal of old concrete and base preparation come first, followed by forming, placement and finishing. Larger patios, decorative finishes and yards with limited access take longer, and your estimate includes a realistic schedule.

Light foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two. We recommend waiting about a week before setting out heavy furniture, grills or large planters. Concrete keeps gaining strength for several weeks, and we provide care guidance for your specific finish.

In most cases we recommend removing the old slab. Pouring over cracked or settled concrete carries the same movement into the new surface and raises the height at door thresholds. During the site visit we check the existing patio and explain your options.

Yes. A concrete pool deck needs a slip-resistant finish, careful joint placement and drainage that carries water away from the pool and the house. We plan the deck around the coping, equipment access and the way your family uses the yard.

Yes. Stamped patterns can resemble stone, slate or brick, and integral color runs through the concrete for a consistent tone. Many homeowners choose a plain patio with a decorative border as a middle ground. See our stamped and decorative concrete options for more design ideas.

Yes. Sloped lots often call for concrete steps, a split-level layout or a retaining wall to create level space. We review the grade during the estimate and recommend the approach that suits your yard.

It depends on the city and the scope. A patio poured at ground level often does not need a building permit, while patio covers, walls and work near property lines can. In Escondido, permits are handled by the City of Escondido Building Division. Many North County neighborhoods also require HOA approval, and we can provide the project details your association requests.

Sweep regularly and rinse the surface as needed. Clean grease and food spills promptly, especially near the grill. Colored and decorative finishes benefit from periodic resealing, and we explain the right schedule when your patio is complete.

Call (858) 630-4649 or complete the estimate form with your address, a short description of the project and photos of the area. We will schedule a site visit, review the options with you and provide a written estimate.
