Mendenhall Concrete

Professional Concrete Driveway Contractor

A driveway is the hardest working surface on any property. It carries every vehicle you own, sits in full sun year round, and sets the first impression of your home. Those demands are why we plan a driveway with the same care we give a foundation.

Mendenhall Concrete handles concrete driveway installation and replacement throughout North County, and we carry the whole project ourselves: demolition and hauling, a rebuilt and compacted base, then a surface sized and reinforced for the vehicles it will hold.

Every concrete driveway in Escondido, CA begins with a careful look at the grade, the soil, and where the water goes. By the time we have walked the site together, you’ll know the plan, the schedule, and the cost.

OUR STANDARDS

Why Concrete Is the Right Surface for a Driveway

A concrete driveway in Escondido, CA has to carry vehicle weight, coastal sun, and decades of daily use. Concrete does all of that while asking very little of you in return.

Built for the Load

Thickness and reinforcement matched to the vehicles you actually own, from a daily driver to a loaded work truck.

Very Little Upkeep

There's no annual resealing, patching, or regrading to budget for. An occasional rinse is all a well-finished driveway asks of you.

Lasting Curb Appeal

A clean, level driveway changes how the front of your home presents itself, whether you're staying put or preparing to sell.

Suited to This Climate

Each surface is finished for North County sun, coastal air, and the ground movement that comes with dry summers and wet winters.

Your Choice of Finish

Broom, exposed aggregate, integral color, or a stamped border, selected to suit your home rather than applied by default.

Repair or Replace

Signs Your Driveway Is Ready for Replacement

Most driveways fail from the base up rather than the surface down. Once the ground underneath has shifted or washed out, patching the surface buys a season or two at best. Concrete driveway replacement rebuilds what sits below the slab, so the new surface has something solid to rest on.

You May Need a New Driveway If You Notice:

  • Cracks That Keep Returning: When a patched crack reopens within a year, something is moving underneath, and a surface repair cannot reach it.
  • Sections at Different Heights: Slabs that have settled or lifted against each other are a trip hazard and a sign the base has given way.
  • Water Pooling or Running the Wrong Way: Standing water, or runoff heading toward your garage or foundation, means the slope is no longer doing its job.
  • A Surface That’s Worn Thin: Flaking, exposed aggregate where there shouldn’t be any, and a chalky finish all point to a slab near the end of its life.
  • Spreading Stains and Pitting: Deep oil staining and pitted patches rarely clean up, and resurfacing over a compromised slab will not hold.

Mendenhall Concrete did an excellent job on my driveway. They arrived right on time and got started right away. I watched the whole process and I even made videos of each step. Mike’s team was very professional and obviously focused on doing the best possible job. Not only was the work exemplary but dealing with Mike, the company owner, was easy and friendly. His bid was very thorough in his description of what would be done to accomplish my project. I got several bids and Mendenhal’s bid was the most detailed in the description of the labor needed and obviously showing his knowledge of city coding in laying concrete that other bids I got didn’t. There was absolutely nothing in my experience with Mendenhall Concrete that I didn’t like.

Love these guys! Wonderful company that worked with my ideas and designs to make them work for me. They poured a spa slab in the back and two patio slabs with spaces to backfill with soil and pebble, as well as framed an existing sidewalk with pavers. The pavers bring life to an old sidewalk and it looks like they were always there. They were wonderful, detailed, timely and stayed on budget. Their employees are extremely hard working and cleaned as they went. The owner was out here often to check on progress. We only ran into a couple simple obstacles and they were able to suggest some fixes or work around them. They are have reasonable pricing and found the pavers I wanted. I would highly recommend them! Added some before and after pictures.

We just completed a large project with Mendenhall. Mike and his team delivered a high quality project, on time, and on budget with a level of professionalism that most other SD contractors should take note of. They clearly take pride in the work that they do, and it shows. We couldn't be more pleased with the end result, and while the project had a few bumps along the way, communication was prompt and clear.

My service business worked at a home where concrete was recently poured by Mendenhall Concrete. I was absolutely blown away by how charming this home became via a this concrete. Beautiful flower beds, small walls, walk ways and some steps. It took a “so-so” looking home and it turned into a beautiful and charming home.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW LONG DOES A CONCRETE DRIVEWAY TAKE TO INSTALL?

A typical concrete driveway takes several days of on-site work. Demolition and hauling come first, then base preparation and forming, then the concrete goes down, then finishing. Placing the concrete is usually a single morning. Larger driveways, steep approaches, and sites with tight access take longer, and you’ll get a realistic schedule with your estimate.

You can usually walk on the surface after a day. Vehicles are a different load, so we’ll normally ask you to stay off for about a week, and longer for heavier trucks or an RV. We’ll confirm the timing for your project before we leave, since weather and mix both affect it.

Occasionally, though it’s rarely the better answer. An overlay adds height at the garage and the street, and it inherits every problem in the slab underneath. If your existing driveway is structurally sound, we’ll say so. If it isn’t, full removal and replacement is what genuinely lasts.

Yes, and it’s one of the more common requests we get, usually for a third vehicle, a trailer, or an RV pad alongside the existing slab. We’ll look at setbacks, drainage, and how the new section ties into what’s already there before pricing it.

That section often sits in the public right of way, which means your city has a say and a permit is usually involved. We’ll tell you where your property line falls and what your city requires before any work is scheduled, so nothing catches you out partway through.

Broom finish is the standard and the most practical for a driveway, since it gives good traction on a slope. Exposed aggregate, integral color, and a stamped border are all options if you want more presence at the curb. We’ll show you what suits your home and what holds up under tires.

A properly built driveway with a sound base lasts decades, and plenty of the ones we installed in the eighties and nineties are still in service. The variables are almost always underneath: how well the base was compacted, whether the reinforcement suited the soil, and whether water was given somewhere to go.

We do, and you won’t need a separate concrete walkway contractor for it. Concrete sidewalk installation and front walkways are usually part of the same project, and doing them together means the color, finish, and joint lines match rather than almost match. If you only want the driveway done now, we’ll lay out the joints so a future walkway ties in cleanly.

For most North County homes, yes. Concrete handles vehicle loads as one continuous surface, asks for very little maintenance, and holds up under sun and coastal air for decades. Pavers can settle and shift over time, and asphalt needs resealing and softens in summer heat. Concrete costs more at the start and usually less across its life.
