Professional Concrete Foundation and Slab Contractor
Everything built on a property depends on the concrete underneath it. A foundation or slab that is poured on a well-prepared base stays level for decades, while one placed in a hurry can lead to cracks, sticking doors and costly repairs later.
Mendenhall Concrete is a concrete foundation contractor in Escondido, CA serving homeowners throughout North County and coastal San Diego. We form and pour foundations, garage and shop slabs, equipment pads and concrete RV pads, and we handle concrete slab installation for projects of many sizes. When an old slab has failed, we remove it and pour a new one on a corrected base. On sloped lots, a slab is often paired with a retaining wall to hold back the grade, and a matching concrete patio can be poured alongside it.
Each project starts with a site visit to review the plans, the soil and the drainage. You then receive a written estimate that sets out the scope, the steps involved and the schedule before any excavation begins.
Why Concrete Is the Right Base for Your Project
A properly built foundation or slab carries the weight of the structure above it and keeps that load spread evenly across the ground. Concrete does this better than any other material used on residential sites.
Load-Bearing Strength
Reinforced concrete supports walls, vehicles and equipment without bending or shifting, which keeps the structure above it square.
Built on a Prepared Base
Excavation, compaction and grading come first, so the slab rests on stable ground instead of loose fill.
Moisture Control
A vapor barrier and correct grading help keep ground moisture out of garages, workshops and finished spaces.
Suited to Local Soil
Some North County lots have clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. The base and reinforcement are planned for the conditions on your site.
Long Service Life
A slab that is placed, finished and cured correctly needs very little upkeep and serves the property for decades.
Signs a Concrete Slab or Foundation Needs Attention
Slabs rarely fail all at once. Small changes usually appear first, and catching them early gives you more options. If the movement is significant, we recommend a structural engineer review it before any work is planned.
Have Your Slab Inspected If You Notice:
- Widening Cracks: Hairline cracks are common in concrete, but cracks that grow wider or show one side higher than the other point to movement below.
- Uneven or Sloping Floors: A garage or shop floor that dips toward one corner usually means the base has settled.
- Doors and Windows That Stick: Frames that bind or gaps that open above doors can be a sign the foundation has shifted.
- Water Pooling Against the Slab: Water that collects along the edge of a slab softens the soil and speeds up settlement.
- Crumbling or Flaking Surfaces: Scaling and loose concrete on an older slab show that the surface is breaking down.

Mendenhall Concrete did an excellent job on my driveway. They arrived right on time and got started right away. I watched the whole process and I even made videos of each step. Mike’s team was very professional and obviously focused on doing the best possible job. Not only was the work exemplary but dealing with Mike, the company owner, was easy and friendly. His bid was very thorough in his description of what would be done to accomplish my project. I got several bids and Mendenhal’s bid was the most detailed in the description of the labor needed and obviously showing his knowledge of city coding in laying concrete that other bids I got didn’t. There was absolutely nothing in my experience with Mendenhall Concrete that I didn’t like.![]()

Love these guys! Wonderful company that worked with my ideas and designs to make them work for me. They poured a spa slab in the back and two patio slabs with spaces to backfill with soil and pebble, as well as framed an existing sidewalk with pavers. The pavers bring life to an old sidewalk and it looks like they were always there. They were wonderful, detailed, timely and stayed on budget. Their employees are extremely hard working and cleaned as they went. The owner was out here often to check on progress. We only ran into a couple simple obstacles and they were able to suggest some fixes or work around them. They are have reasonable pricing and found the pavers I wanted. I would highly recommend them! Added some before and after pictures.![]()

We just completed a large project with Mendenhall. Mike and his team delivered a high quality project, on time, and on budget with a level of professionalism that most other SD contractors should take note of. They clearly take pride in the work that they do, and it shows. We couldn't be more pleased with the end result, and while the project had a few bumps along the way, communication was prompt and clear.![]()

My service business worked at a home where concrete was recently poured by Mendenhall Concrete. I was absolutely blown away by how charming this home became via a this concrete. Beautiful flower beds, small walls, walk ways and some steps. It took a “so-so” looking home and it turned into a beautiful and charming home.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified that these reviews were published on Mendenhall Concrete's Google Business Profile. COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS AND SLABS DO YOU BUILD?
We pour residential foundations, garage and workshop slabs, equipment pads, shed slabs and concrete RV pads. We also remove and replace slabs that have cracked or settled. During the site visit we confirm the right approach for your project and your lot.
DO YOU WORK FROM ENGINEERED PLANS?
Yes. Foundations for new structures are built to the approved plans, which set the footing sizes, reinforcement and concrete requirements. If your project does not have plans yet, we explain what the city is likely to ask for so you can arrange them before work begins.
DO I NEED A PERMIT FOR A NEW FOUNDATION OR SLAB?
Most new foundations need a building permit and an inspection of the footings and reinforcement before the pour. Some flatwork and slab replacements do not. In Escondido, permits are handled by the City of Escondido Building Division. We confirm the requirements for your city before work begins.
HOW IS THE GROUND PREPARED BEFORE A SLAB IS POURED?
We excavate to the planned depth, remove soft or organic soil, and compact the base in layers. Forms are set to the finished height and grade, and reinforcement is placed so it sits within the slab. A vapor barrier is added where the slab will sit under an enclosed space.
HOW LONG DOES A FOUNDATION OR SLAB PROJECT TAKE?
A garage slab or RV pad usually takes a few days of on-site work once the base is ready. Foundations take longer because of excavation, forming and the city inspection before the pour. Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after placement, and your estimate includes a realistic schedule.
CAN YOU POUR A SLAB FOR A GARAGE OR WORKSHOP?
Yes. Concrete garage slabs and workshop floors are planned around the load they will carry, from vehicles to heavy tools and storage. We set the slope for drainage at the door and finish the surface so it is easy to sweep and clean.
DO YOU INSTALL CONCRETE RV PADS?
Yes. An RV pad gives a motorhome, trailer or boat a level, stable place to park and keeps tires off soft ground. We size the pad to the vehicle and plan the approach so it connects cleanly to your driveway.
WHY DO CONCRETE SLABS CRACK OR SETTLE?
The most common causes are a poorly compacted base, water collecting under the slab and soil that expands and shrinks with the seasons. Tree roots and missing control joints also play a part. Good site preparation and drainage prevent most of these problems before the concrete is poured.
CAN A NEW SLAB CONNECT TO MY EXISTING CONCRETE?
In many cases, yes. A new slab can be joined to an existing slab or footing so the two surfaces stay aligned. We check the condition of the existing concrete first, since joining new work to a failing slab can pass the same problems on.
