Structural Epoxy Injection

Epoxy is a two-component structural adhesive that can be injected into cracks to provide repairs and structural strength. This method is effective on smaller width cracks (generally <1/4”). Injection ports are installed at certain intervals centered over the crack.

The crack is then sealed with an epoxy paste, and a low-viscosity epoxy is injected into the crack. After the epoxy cures, the ports can be removed, and ground epoxy paste will be flush with the concrete surface.

Crack Stitching

For more substantial cracks, a method known as “stitching” can be used. Slots are cut into the concrete perpendicular to the crack and cleaned out. Epoxy is placed in the slots, and reinforcing steel (rebar) or special carbon fiber stitches are inserted into the wet epoxy. Epoxy is applied flush with the surface and allowed to cure and grinded flush.

Carbon Fiber Fabric Reinforcement

Epoxy-saturated carbon fiber fabric is a very robust method to repair and reinforce cracks and can be combined with an epoxy injection or stitching. The crack and adjacent concrete surface is thoroughly cleaned and prepped prior to placement.

Special carbon fiber fabric is either pre-saturated or applied into a wet bed of epoxy thus bridging the crack typically at least four to six inches on each side of the crack while backrolled with more epoxy for a fully saturated bond.

Applications

After cleanup (for smaller repairs), a method called “dry packing” can be used. A cement or grout mixture is mixed with water and/or polymers for elasticity and adhesion in a very thick consistency similar to clay or putty. The repair area is primed with concrete adhesive (as required by the manufacturer), and the structural repair mortar is hand-applied and formed to replace the broken sections.
